Abstract:
Starting from the example of the Plucker ring of the Grassmannian of two-planes in C^m, I will introduce the notion of cluster algebra, highlighting the "Laurent phenomenon". Depending on time I will touch upon the classification theorem of finite-type cluster algebras and discuss instances of this structure in various branches of Mathematics.

The "What is...?" seminars are informal talks organized by students of the Geometry and Mathematical Physics sector. Their aim is to present in an accessible way various topics in contemporary mathematics.
Everybody is welcome to attend.
