Advanced topics on the mechanics of active materials and biological systems

Course Type:
PhD Course
Academic Year:
2021-2022
Period:
April-July
Duration:
40 h
Description:

Review of the mechanics of deforming solid bodies (kinematics, balance laws, constitutive equations, variational principles). Reduced structural models (rods, plates, shells) for structures made of (passive) elastic materials. The notion of target metric and spontaneous curvature. Residual stresses. Active strains and active stresses. Reduced structural models (rods, plates, shells) for structures made of active elastic materials. Selected case studies from the recent literature inspired by applications to soft robotics and mechano-biology.
