abstract = {The Kadomtsev]Petviashvili KP. equation is known to admit explicit periodic\\r\\nand quasiperiodic solutions with N independent phases, for any integer\\r\\nN, based on a Riemann theta-function of N variables. For Ns1 and 2,\\r\\nthese solutions have been used successfully in physical applications. This\\r\\narticle addresses mathematical problems that arise in the computation of\\r\\ntheta-functions of three variables and with the corresponding solutions of\\r\\nthe KP equation. We identify a set of parameters and their corresponding\\r\\nranges, such that e{\textasciidieresis}ery real-valued, smooth KP solution associated with a\\r\\nRiemann theta-function of three variables corresponds to exactly one choice\\r\\nof these parameters in the proper range. Our results are embodied in a\\r\\nprogram that computes these solutions efficiently and that is available to the\\r\\nreader. We also discuss some properties of three-phase solutions.},
