Abstract:

In the world of knots and links, the Jones polynomial has played an important role with results both in mathematics and in physics. In this seminar, we will see how to construct the Jones polynomial for a knot, and discuss two important applications, that are the possibility to detect chiral knots and to give a non-trivial lower bound on the crossing number of a knot. We will also include a presentation of the physical contexts in which the Jones polynomial arises.
