Abstract: 

In this talk I will present some recent (published and unpublished) work on the modelling and simulation of flow and transport in porous materials. In particular I will focus on two topics. First I will present a novel spectral adjoint-homogenisation approach to deal with dominant heterogeneous reaction terms which result in a non-constant invariant/equilibrium distribution at the leading order, making standard two-scale asymptotics fail. In the second part of the talk I will instead deal with non-equilibrium pre-asymptotic extensions of macroscopic models for Taylor dispersion in a tube. Taking inspiration from projection-based model reduction and homogenisation, we develop an optimal separable expansion for the concentration field in the tube, with modes constructed from the high-order homogenisation correctors. Examples and implementations with OpenFOAM, HiMod, and Fenics will be discussed.
