 In this talk I will discuss some variational methods for the subriemannian geodesic problem. In the first part, after a brief introduction to the subject, I will study the topology of the space of horizontal curves (a possibly very singular space, due to the presence of abnormal curves) and I will establish some results concerning its homotopy type, mimicking the classical path-fibration technique.
