Abstract:

In this talk, we show how the mechanical behaviour of some thin structures with tunable and controllable spontaneous curvature can be rigorously described in the framework of a couple of non-Euclidean plate and rod theories. The analysis is illustrated in the case study of narrow strips of nematic elastomers whose typical appearance, at minimum energy, is that of spiral or helicoid-like ribbons.
