Theta functions yield a well-defined map on the universal cover of a Riemann surface once a choice of canonical homology basis has been made. We will see how this machinery can be applied, in the case of hyperelliptic curves, to construct explicit solutions to a particular Riemann Hilbert problem and to compute the Tau function of the associated isomonodromy problem.
