We introduce a new approach to the curvature of sub-Riemannian manifolds as previously introduced by Zelenko, Li, Agrachev, Barilari and Rizzi. The approach uses affine connections and their adjoints. We are able to give an algorithm for computing the curvature of any sub-Riemannian manifold. We use it to give a universal Bonnet-Myers theorem of Riemannian type.
