Abstract:
The idea of considering the motive of an algebraic variety
goes back to Grothendieck, who realized that all cohomological
invariants associated to a variety via different cohomology theories
should be connected by a "common pattern", of which they are just
different realizations. Since then, there has been a lot of study on
this subject, but it is far from being fully understood (some parts are
still conjectural).
In this seminar, I will explain the philosophy underlying the theory of
motives. I will discuss both pure and mixed motives, focusing mostly on
the first ones (for simplicity). If time allows, I will also talk about
motivic Galois groups.
