Abstract:

Globally hyperbolic spacetime have been extensively studied by mathematicians and physicists for their importance in general relativity. In the first part of the seminar we will briefly introduce these spaces with their fundamental properties and we will state the main result on their smooth structure proved by Chernov-Nemirovski. In the second part we will construct the Whitehead manifold, sketching an idea of the proof of its topological properties and seeing how it leads us to remarkable conclusions in the context of globally hyperbolic spacetimes.
