Laurea Magistrale DSSC

Italian English La laurea magistrale in Data Science and Scientific Computing (DSSC) è un corso internazionale in inglese offerto dalle Università di Trieste e di Udine in collaborazione con SISSA (International School for Advanced Studies), ICTP (International Centre for Theoretical Physics) e molti altri istituti di ricerca ed aziende locali.

DSSC mira alla formazione di figure professionali altamente richieste per via della digitalizzazione della società e dell'evoluzione dell'Industria 4.0.

La laurea magistrale in Data Science and Scientific Computing (DSSC) è strutturata in 2 curricula, ciascuno dei quali è organizzato in diversi piani di studio con una proposta di corsi di specializzazione corrispondenti ad una specifica area applicativa. Il primo semestre del primo anno è dedicato ai corsi centrali in comune tra i due curricula mentre il secondo semestre è concentrato su corsi caratterizzanti il curriculum. Per il secondo anno, lo studente può scegliere i corsi di specializzazione su un'area applicativa di interesse, a seconda del piano di studi scelto, e proseguirà la sua formazione con corsi seminariali e con un possibile tirocinio in un'azienda o in un istituto di ricerca. Il percorso formativo si concluderà con la stesura di una tesi magistrale.

Entrambi i curricula forniscono una solida preparazione sulle tre aree seguenti:
  • Data analytics e machine learning
  • Modellizzazione matematica e computazionale
  • Informatica, in particulare high-performance e calcolo distribuito
Ciascuno studente avrà l'opportunità di completare la proprio formazione con corsi a scelta che completano l'offerta formativa e rendono ogni percorso unico.

Curricula

Curriculum Data Science

L'obiettivo è la formazione di una figura professionale nel campo del data management e data analysis, con particolare attenzione al Big Data. Questo curriculum prevede corsi su machine learning, metodi statistici e data management. Ci si può specializzare ulteriormente in una delle seguenti aree: healthcare, foundations of data science, data engineering, social sciences, genomics e biotechnology.

Curriculum Computational Science and Engineering

L'obiettivo è la formazione di esperti in Computational Science e Engineering. Questo curriculum si concentra più su computational modelling, optimization, scientific programming e simulation. Le aree applicative di specializzazione sono svariate: fluidodinamica per scienze ingegneristiche e naturali, fisica computazionale, chimica computazionale, cosmologia computazionale, controllo e simulation-based design.

Borse di studio

Ci sono diverse borse di studio disponibili per un supporto parziale o totale:
  • Borse "Training the Specialists of the Future", finanziate da aziende ed istituzioni (vedi la lista degli sponsors qui) per supportare studenti talentuosi. Nell'anno accademico 2017-2018, sono state messe a disposizione 15 borse per studenti regolarmente iscritti al primo anno. La borsa ammonta a 2800€ (2562€ al netto di tasse).
  • 4 borse finanziate dalla SISSA: approssimativamente 6000€ all'anno con l'aggiunta di 250€ mensili per l'affitto. La scadenza per la presentazioine della domanda è il 31 Agosto 2021 - 13:00. Qui il bando ed il modulo per presentare la domanda.
  • Borse totali finanziate dall'ARDISS, ma non specifiche per il DSSC (il bando è aperto a tutti gli studenti iscritti all'università di Trieste). Maggiori informazioni sulle borse e sulle modalità per fare richiesta sono disponibili sulla pagina web dell'ARDISS.

    Italian English The Master degree in Data Science and Scientific Computing (DSSC) is an international course, taught in English, and it is offered by the Universities of Trieste and Udine, with the collaboration of SISSA (International School for Advanced Studies), ICTP (International Centre for Theoretical Physics), and of many other research institutions and companies of the area.

    DSSC aims to train professionals of the future: experts that are highly requested because of the digitalization of the society and the evolution to industry 4.0.

    The Master degree in Data Science and Scientific Computing (DSSC) is structured into 2 curricula. Each curriculum is further organized in several study plans, each corresponding to a specific application area, proposing a choice of specialization courses. The first semester of first year is devoted to core courses common to both curricula. The second semester of first year is focused on core courses specific to each curriculum. In the second year, instead, the student can choose specialization courses on an application area of interest, depending on the selected study plan. During the second year, students will also have to complete their preparation with seminar courses, they can do an internship in a company or in a research lab, and they will have to write their master thesis.

    Both curricula will give you a solid preparation in 3 main areas:
    • Data analytics and machine learning
    • Mathematical and computational modeling
    • Informatics, in particular high-performance and distributed computing
    Each student will then have the opportunity to complete his/her own training with some elective courses, which complete the formative offer and make each training unique.

    Curricula

    Curriculum Data Science

    You will be trained to become a professional in the fields of data management and data analysis, with a particular focus on Big Data. In this curriculum you will follow courses on machine learning, statistical methods and data management. You can further specialize in one of the several application areas: healthcare, foundations of data science, data engineering, social sciences, genomics and biotechnology.

    Curriculum Computational Science and Engineering

    It will train future experts in Computational Science and Engineering. Here the focus is more on computational modelling, optimization, scientific programming, and simulation. Also in this case the application areas of specialization are numerous: fluid dynamics for engineering and earth sciences, computational physics, computational chemistry, computational cosmology, control and simulation-based design.

    Scholarships

    There are scholarships available to fully or partially support the study of some students:
    • Scholarships "Training the Specialists of the Future", funded by private companies and institutions (see the list of sponsors here) to support talented students enrolling in the master program. In the academic year 2017-2018, there were 15 funded scholarships. The grant amounts to 2800€ (2562€ after tax).
    • 4 scholarships covering full support sponsored by SISSA: approximatively 6000€ per year plus 250€ per month of refund for the rent. Application deadline is August 31 - 13:00, 2021. Here you can find the call and the form for application.
    • Scholarships covering full support sponsored by ARDISS, but not specific to DSSC (all students enrolled to the university can apply). More information on the fellowships and how to apply is available in the ARDISS web page.

  • MSc in Mathematics

    Italian English SISSA and the University of Trieste coordinate a joint curriculum (the "Percorso Formativo Comune", PFC below) aiming at offering an excellence MSc program in Mathematics for brilliant students who want to follow a high-level research career.

    Starting from the academic year 2018/2019 the MSc program will have a curriculum with courses entirely taught in English (more details here). This curriculum is part of the PFC program and gives the possibility to both Italian and international students to obtain the PFC Diploma.

    Every year SISSA awards some fellowships to brilliant students, both Italian and international, who want to be enrolled to the PFC program.
    The program is however open to all students, also those without a fellowship. Fellows are committed to the following academic requirements: pass all the exams with a grade no lower than 24/30 and with a weighted average of at least 27/30; the curriculum and the MSc thesis should be approved by a SISSA committee and each fellow must attend a final examination.
    At the end of the two years of the MSc program, students who have fulfilled all the merit requirements will be awarded the PFC Diploma. The diploma can also be awarded to students without the fellowship, given that they have satisfied the above academic requirements.

    Fellowships are assigned through a competitive selection, aiming at verifying the basic mathematical knowledge of the candidates and their attitude toward a research activity. Exceptionally qualified non-EU students can be assigned the fellowship based on their curriculum. (Details for the application can be found below.)

    Fellowships
